Word of the Year 2024
It's that time of year that I begin the inspiration for next year's Word (or Words) of the Year. For me, the Word of the Year encompasses the energy that informs much of what I want to embody, grow into, focus on, etc. This is something that I have been doing for decades - I stick post-it notes of my WOTY on the bathroom mirror; I create memes of it for my computer and phone wallpaper; I use it in my meditations and visualizations. In short, this is an exercise I take seriously. And lightly!
Last year my primary word was Reclamation, which was an energetically BIG word to hold! I had committed to continue excavating my authenticity, awakening my innate sacred feminine wisdom, finding my power ... in other words, reclaiming ME! Secondary words/phrases for this past year were Curiosity and Both/And.
The year before, my word was Comfort - and I was really challenged by it. Comfort wasn't 'spiritual,' I couldn't see how it would inspire healing or growth or personal development. But boy, was I wrong! Comfort was instrumental in helping me set boundaries where I didn't even know I needed them. (Does this feel ok? Will this be comfortable for me? Etc.) Comfort helped me become more embodied, more 'comfortable' in my body. It was a powerful word, so much more than I could've imagined.
The interesting bit is that I don't consciously choose a word. I let the word choose me. I invite words to come in (usually 3-5 words initially). I sit with them, explore their meanings and energies. I let them sort themselves out - this usually means I 'try them on' for a few days to see how they feel, kind of like a new pair of shoes to see if they fit. They rise and fall in significance until The One settles in.
I've already got a couple of words floating around. I'm kinda hoping for a word that doesn't feel quite so big, so transformative, like Play or Joy ... but then I also know that if one of those words is The Word, it'll highlight everything in my life that ISN'T that! Like the old phrase, "Be careful what you wish for." Or "May you live in interesting times." And "Please give me patience ... and give it to me NOW!" That said, Play is one that's in play (see what I did there?), or maybe Fun. Also Integration, Dance, and Authenticity are floating around. It's cool seeing what stays, what goes, and what evolves into something else. I'll let you all know when The Word has landed.
Do you have an annual Word or Words for the Year? What's coming through for you for 2024? And what's your process for claiming it? I'd love to know...!

A Time of Rest & Renewal
I’ve always loved winter here in the northern hemisphere. I love the snow, the cuddling under warm blankets when it’s freezing outside. As a natural night owl, I love the long nights. I love that as a self-employed person, I am able to schedule my work and balance it with the seasons. I think I’ve naturally been drawn to living my life seasonally, and so I’ve never found winter to be challenging. It is true that our culture makes it difficult to live in natural rhythmic cycles, and that’s so unfortunate. We would be much happier, much healthier if we would simply synch to the natural world.
"The winter solstice time is no longer celebrated as it once was, with the understanding that this is a period of descent and rest, of going within our homes, within ourselves, and taking in all that we have been through, all that has passed in this full year which is coming to a close... Like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is so necessary for our tired limbs, our burdened minds.
...The natural tug to go inwards as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and the weather so bitter that people are left feeling that winter is hard because, for those of us without burning fires and big festive families, it can be lonely and isolating. Whereas winter is kind, it points us in its quiet, soft way towards our inner self, this annual time of peace and reflection, embracing the darkness and forgiving, accepting, and loving embracing goodbye the past year.
Winter takes away the distractions, the buzz, and presents us with the perfect time to rest and withdraw into a womb-like love, bringing fire & light to our hearth.... And then, just around the corner the new year will begin again, and like a seed planted deep in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy once again to dance in the sunlight.
May Winter bless you with its invitation for rest, rejuvenation, and peace." ~Brigit Anna McNeill
